Ball screws handle high speed operation

A Steinmeyer UK product story

Steinmeyer has added two new sises, with large leads, to its UltraSpeed line of precision ground ball screws specifically designed for high speed operation.

The new sises are 30 x 40 (30mm diameter with 40mm lead) and 65 x 80 (65mm diameter with 80mm lead).

The UltraSpeed series ball screws, with DN rating of 160,000 (33% higher than conventional designs), enable very high speed operation.

Through advanced thread grinding technology, and lead to diameter ratios from 0.5:1 to greater than 1:1, linear velocities of 4000in/min are possible, at accelerations of 2g and higher.

The UltraSpeed series is based on a new ball return system that uses precision ball deflectors to guide the balls into a return channel spanning the entire nut length.

The ball deflectors, precision milled from steel, use a complex geometry that minimises friction, allowing substantially higher speeds (33%+) with less wear compared with conventional tube type return systems.

Travel life is increased because noise and vibration levels are significantly reduced.

The UltraSpeed system, with a dual-start thread, is available with two preload systems.

One uses two-point contact preload with pitch offset in a single nut.

The second option is ball oversize preload with double the number of load carrying balls, within the same envelope.

In both cases, the result is a more compact nut design with improved stiffness compared with conventional designs.

And, as is the case with all Steinmeyer ball screws, these new sizes can be used in rotating nut designs.

Applications for these new high lead ball screws include high speed laser cutting and drilling machines, and electronic assembly machines.
