Sony Europe's Image Sensing Solutions Division featured a working demonstration of its upcoming range of colour raw (CR) IEEE1394b cameras, on its stand at IPOT and Machine Vision 2005.

Colour raw variants are expected to mark the second phase of Sony's entry into the industrial IEEE1394b arena, initiated last month with the launch of its XCD-V50 camera, the smallest IEEE1394b camera available, and the first for the industrial market.

The company's demonstration at IPOT included a prerelease sample version of the forthcoming XCD-V50CR camera used to capture the movements of an AIBO (Sony Entertainment Robot in the shape of a dog) in full resolution (VGA) and at high speed (60 frames per second).

The raw colour outputs from the camera were linked by an IEEE1394b 800Mbit/s link to a VAIO PC equipped with a 1394b interface board.

The new CR cameras will deliver raw luminance for each red, green and blue pixel, allowing customers to use a known external reference level when measuring colour.

Offering CR output gives customers access to enhanced fidelity, and allows them to apply proprietary colour conversion routines outside the camera at computer level.

The XCD-V50CR camera is expected to include a CCD with a Bayer RGB colour mask filter and to output pixel values at more than 10bit/pixel.

The colour conversion in the computer will be supported by Sony's IEEE1394b driver and most third party IEEE1394 (FireWire) compatible software.

The XCD-V50CR is expected to be commercially available in summer 2005.
