3D CAD software installed as a teaching
tool
SolidWorks 3D CAD software has been installed as a teaching tool for engineering students at University of California Berkeley.
SolidWorks Corporation, a leading provider of 3D CAD software for the mainstream market, has installed SolidWorks software for 105 workstations at the University of California at Berkeley, to be used in teaching mechanical engineering students during the academic year 2000-2001 in Berkeley's College of Engineering Berkeley's Mechanical Engineering department offers approximately 50 undergraduate courses divided into a lower division and an upper division
Students are introduced to SolidWorks in lower division courses, such as the Basic Engineering and Design Graphics class, and then use their knowledge of the software throughout the upper division courses.
In Basic Engineering and Design Graphics, students are introduced to engineering design processes, graphics communications tools, conceptual design techniques, tolerance analyses, and spatial reasoning skills.
"SolidWorks' ease of use and short learning curve are two essential reasons why we use the software in our engineering courses," said Hami Kazerooni, Professor of mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley.
"We have other CAD packages available in our design labs, but the students have shown a strong preference for SolidWorks due to its ease-of-use, speed, power, and flexibility." "When students are first learning the basics of engineering, CAD software shouldn't impede the learning process - it should facilitate it.
That's exactly what SolidWorks does," said Rosanne Kramer, manager of SolidWorks worldwide education markets.
"We are proud to be a part of Berkeley's top-notch curriculum.
The combination of SolidWorks software and Berkeley's engineering courses gives graduates the essential skills they need to be successful." With offices throughout California, Hawk Ridge Systems, an authorized SolidWorks reseller, is providing training and support to the SolidWorks instructional lab installations at UC Berkeley.
Hawk Ridge Systems, who services University of California Berkeley, is one of the country's leading CAD VARs and the fastest-growing SolidWorks VAR in the United States.
Founded in 1995 in the San Francisco Bay area, the company posted record growth of 35% per quarter in 1999.
Today, it has five sales offices and a territory that extends from southern California to Seattle, Washington.
Hawk Ridge has eight full time engineers on staff, and maintains a 2:1 ratio of engineers to sales people--more than double the industry norm.
This heavy investment in customer support, plus an array of industry-leading products including SolidWorks (www.solidworks.com), COSMOS/Works (www.cosmosworks.com), and Activault (www.solidpartners.com/activault.htm), has attracted hundreds of west coast customers industries ranging from networking products and semiconductor equipment to medical devices.
Chartered in 1868, the University of California has a tradition of excellence in academics, faculty, and student achievement.
The University encompasses 10 campuses, five medical schools and teaching hospitals, three law schools and a statewide Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
The Berkeley campus faculty includes seven Nobel laureates, 119 members of the National Academy of Sciences and 80 members of the National Academy of Engineering.
More than 31,000 students are currently enrolled at Berkeley and the academic departments consistently rank among the best in the country.
