Share Solidworks designs over the internet

A Solidworks product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 5, 2000

SolidWorks has announced 3D Meeting, an add-in to SolidWorks software that enables users to view and share in real-time SolidWorks mechanical designs over the Internet.

SolidWorks Corporation, a leading provider of affordable, easy-to-use 3D CAD software for the mainstream market, today announced 3D Meeting, an innovative add-in to SolidWorks software that enables users to view and share in real-time SolidWorks mechanical designs over the Internet.

3D Meeting enhances design communication by enabling vendors, manufacturers, and customers to participate in live, online meetings to review SolidWorks models resulting in a reduction in development time.

In order to initiate a 3D Meeting, the SolidWorks user emails invitations to the desired participants from within SolidWorks.

Meeting participants can then watch from any PC in the world using a standard web browser as the meeting host creates, rotates, zooms, or highlights design changes within SolidWorks parts, assemblies, or drawings.

Participants can also request control from the meeting host enabling them to drive the session and implement changes if desired.

It is not necessary to have SolidWorks software installed on the participants' PCs to take part in this 3D communication process.

"3D Meeting enhances the power of Microsoft*'s NetMeeting technology for every SolidWorks user," said Scott Emigh, mechanical design automation (MDA) industry manager at Microsoft Corp.

"Leveraging the power of Windows* technology, SolidWorks 3D Meeting enables engineers to visually communicate 3D design intent faster and easier than ever before.

"3D Meeting joins eDrawings as our second solution to deliver on our Internet vision.

This vision is that the Internet allows us to bring the power of 3D to everybody involved in design and manufacturing," commented Scott Harris, vice president of collaborative solutions at SolidWorks.

"3D Meeting uses the power of the Internet to let SolidWorks users immediately and securely share SolidWorks assemblies, parts, and drawings with anyone else involved with the design.

System Requirements: 3D Meeting is compatible with SolidWorks 2000 Service Pack 1 or later.

System requirements include: * An Internet enabled PC * Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT*, Windows 98 or Windows 95.

* Microsoft NetMeeting 3.01 - if the participant does not have NetMeeting currently installed, SolidWorks 3D Meeting provides an option to automatically download and install NetMeeting.
