The University of Calgary, Canada, uses SolidWorks Education Edition 3D mechanical design software to jumpstart students' mechanical and manufacturing engineering careers.

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering at University of Calgary, Canada, purchased 200 university-wide licences of SolidWorks Education Edition 3D mechanical design software in September 2003 to jumpstart students' mechanical and manufacturing engineering careers Students use the software in a number of undergraduate and graduate courses to design a vast array of products, from simple pepper grinders to complex racing cars for Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) student competitions

The university's campus licence of the SolidWorks Education Edition comes equipped with 50 licences of Cosmos design analysis software to enable students to test their designs for structural strength and interferences prior to production.

Most students use CosmosWorks design analysis software or CosmosMotion motion simulation and kinematics software, and half of the students use both tools for the final design projects of a computer-aided design (CAD) course, according to Dr Deyi Xue, Associate Professor of the university's Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.

"We selected SolidWorks and Cosmos because they're easy to learn and use", said Xue.

"Our students can now spend more time learning about design and innovation than training to operate a complex software tool".

"SolidWorks includes short, concise tutorials to further shorten students' time to productivity".

"Moreover, SolidWorks and Cosmos are fully integrated, making analysis a part of the design process, as it should be".

The university's undergraduate mechanical and manufacturing engineering students use SolidWorks in a number of design courses.

Graduate students of this department and students from the Faculty of Environmental Design taking advanced CAD also use SolidWorks.

The university's undergraduate engineering design curriculum also has been actively involved in the Canadian Design Engineering Network (CDEN), a consortium promoting engineering design education within Canadian universities.

Some of the CDEN member schools have been using both SolidWorks and Cosmos software in their curriculum.

"The University of Calgary is a leader among Canadian universities in research and scholarship in design engineering".

"It recognises that with SolidWorks, the university can quickly, efficiently, and cost-effectively prepare students for careers in engineering and add value to the educational experience", said Rosanne Kramer, Director of Worldwide Education Markets for SolidWorks Corp.

"The complexity of their designs is impressive and speaks volumes about the quality of teaching and learning taking place at Calgary".

"We applaud their commitment to providing rich education to their students and their commitment to the Canadian Design Engineering Network".

"We look forward to meeting additional members of the network at the CDEN conference in July".

SolidWorks is a gold sponsor of the inaugural CDEN Design Conference, which takes place on 29th and 30th July at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec.

WestCAM Technologies, an authorised SolidWorks reseller, is providing ongoing software support and training to University of Calgary students, faculty, and staff.
