Force sensors check obstruction detection systems

A Sensor Developments product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jul 5, 2006

Sensors allow the evaluation of obstruction detection mechanisms used on power actuated windows, doors, lift gates and sunroofs on today's vehicles.

Power actuated windows, doors, lift gates and sunroofs on today's vehicles have created the potential for passengers to be trapped or pinched as these mechanisms open and close.

Sensor Developments has developed sensors to allow the evaluation of the obstruction detection mechanisms used in these vehicles, accurately determining the force levels applied, and most of all helping prevent these injuries from occurring in the first place.

The standard sensor was designed to mount on the vehicle window glass and monitor the "auto-up" feature.

This hands free package features selectable spring rates and obstacle distances, allowing one sensor to measure multiple applications.

Other standard sensor offerings include handheld force sensors.

Each is designed to a specific obstacle distance and spring rate (per FMVSS118 and Directive 74/60/EEC).

Users can perform quick spot checks in the field or factory floor to ensure the anti-trap system is operating within guidelines.

Another unique sensor package is now available to measure the closing forces of powered lift gates and sliding doors.

Many models of SUVs and mini-vans now offer these systems as standard features.

Vehicle manufacturers need to verify these anti-trap forces as well.

This sensor design accomplishes this task for the engineers and designers.

Though unique to each vehicle platform, the design concept is a proven approach for all to ensure compliance with international specifications.
