Sprint Electric DC drives were recently installed in the stage control system at Det Norske Teatret (The Norwegian Theatre), a major theatre in Oslo, Norway The new control system includes Sprint Electric's PLX digital DC drives for 119 fly bars and point hoists

The system installed is capable of operating all the drives simultaneously.

Technicians from the Swedish stage design company Visual Act programmed continuous movements and effects involving all 119 drives.

Sprint Electric's PLX drives communicating over Profibus replaced the existing centralized system.

This resulted in the removal of 8 tonnes of cable.

A second Profibus system handles the absolute encoders and allows for independent control of position and safety.

Visual Act's Jim Fainberg stated: "We believe that this type of installation will be more common, as it is possible to update a system to the latest standards without a total refit of winches and mechanics".

"Customers' demands for greater efficiency and to meet the latest safety standards can be handled within a reasonable budget".

"The system is both economical and at the forefront of technology." The Sprint Electric PLX drives' functionality and compact design is being used in many other applications where DC drives continue to provide significant advantages over their AC counterparts.

The PLX's extensive range of application software functions enable difficult tasks to be completed easily and efficiently without costly external hardware.

The PLX is part of an integrated range of two- and four-quadrant DC drives, from 0.37 to 265kW.
