All new Thermsave accumulator packages will now come complete with associated controls and ancillary equipment supplied by Spirax Sarco.

Spirax Sarco and steam accumulator specialist Thermsave Engineering have signed a partnership agreement under which all new Thermsave accumulator packages will now come complete with associated controls and ancillary equipment supplied by Spirax Sarco The new agreement combines Thermsave Engineering's expertise in accumulators with Spirax Sarco's market leading brand in steam system controls, and gives steam users a 'one-stop-shop' for the whole accumulator package

This simplifies purchasing and guarantees that all the component parts will work efficiently together.

Accumulators provide an instant source of steam to supplement the output from boilers when meeting peak loads, and answer a common problem: How can you ensure you have enough steam available to cover peaks in demand without having to purchase an oversized boiler? It is very energy inefficient to use oversized boilers, while undersized boilers could carry water over into the steam distribution system at peak loads, potentially locking out the boiler.

Having an extra boiler on standby is usually unsatisfactory because of the time lag between a surge in demand and the boiler attaining its working pressure.

The peak load may well be over by the time the extra steam is available.

Accumulators provide an instant supply of clean, dry, saturated steam to supplement the output from the boiler whenever there is a surge in demand.

They are essentially well-insulated pressure vessels, in which water is heated by injected steam until it is at the same temperature and pressure as the boiler.

If there is a surge in demand, the associated drop in pressure generates flash steam, which boosts the supply to the production process with suitable controls protecting the boiler.

The initial expense of installing two larger boilers is roughly the same as that of buying two smaller boilers plus an accumulator.

However the energy savings, and significantly lower maintenance costs associated with accumulators, means that they are almost invariably a better option on any site with a widely fluctuating steam demand.
