Satra slip investment confirms world status in its footwear slip resistance test centre.

Satra has reinforced its status as the world's leading footwear slip resistance test centre with the installation of a fourth slip rig in its new state-of-the-art footwear laboratory.

The UK-based technology centre believes no other test house is as well equipped to assess the slip resistance of footwear 'both everyday and safety styles' using Satra TM144 and the EN ISO 13287 test protocols.

Satra now has four specially designed SATRA STM 603 rigs with which to evaluate all types of footwear solings, from children's shoes to industrial footwear, against many types of flooring surface, including ceramic tiles, wood, carpet, concrete, GRP resin and even ice.

The equipment can also be used to determine the slip properties of flooring materials using a standard soling compound.

The Satra machines and test method have been developed as a result of extensive biomechanical research and are being continually updated.

New features, including advanced Satra control software, are continually being introduced to ensure test data is of the highest accuracy.

This investment has enabled Satra to substantially increase its testing capacity to meet growing demand from manufacturers, suppliers and retailers who are fully aware of the repercussions of slip and trip accidents caused by inadequate footwear or dangerous floorings.

Latest UK figures show that 37 per cent of all reported major accidents at work are slip-related.

The cost, in terms of absence and lost productivity, amounts to more than £800 million a year.

Figures are comparable in many other countries.

Satra experts are fully involved with all the relevant EN and ISO committees dealing with slip resistance and therefore have the latest information on any new standard developments.

New European safety footwear standards are expected to be published in July and international test methods are also currently being developed for everyday footwear.
