Radial shaft seals take sensors onboard

A radial shaft seal with condition monitoring indicates when the time has come for maintenance or replacement.

Radial shaft seals are exposed to greater loads and stresses than most other machine elements Moreover, they are indispensable for the serviceability of many machines and plants

These essential elements have been made even more reliable by the integration of an optical sensor and a condition-monitoring function.

A radial shaft seal with condition monitoring indicates when the time has come for maintenance or replacement.

This simplifies servicing, especially in difficult-to-access areas or isolated machines and plants.

The MSS1 plus radial shaft seals, which are available for the first time in standard dimensions and standard materials, were exhibited at the special Condition Monitoring Show at the 2005 Hanover Trade Fair.

Approximately 30 different sizes are available and there are no associated tool costs.

This means that they are worth the investment even for small batches.

Radial shaft seals are indispensable sealing elements that are used on almost every flange bore to keep the most varied machines and aggregates running smoothly even under the most adverse conditions.

Radial shaft seals are subject to physical, tribological, or chemical wear.

Nevertheless, they are often capable of sealing reliably for well over 10kh of operation.

Simrit developed the MSS1 plus radial shaft seal to eliminate the need to replace a fully functional rotary shaft seal as a preventive measure.

If the sealing function begins to deteriorate at the end of the seal's service life, the leaking oil is instantly absorbed by the radial shaft seal's nonwoven depot.

An integral sensor in the sealing system identifies that the nowoven has been contaminated by the oil and generates a signal that is then evaluated by a programmable electronic unit.

Once the deterioration of the sealing function has been registered by the sensor, a message can be sent automatically to the operator of the aggregate or the plant once a freely programmable interval has elapsed.

Although this only marginally extends the service life of the sealing system, it means that its replacement can be planned, or it can be replaced during a regular maintenance service in order to avoid additional machine downtime.

Many small gears contain very little oil.

This means that if a loss of oil goes unnoticed, the risk to the aggregate can be significant.

The sensor signal helps avoid such malfunctions.

With its monitoring function, this radial shaft seal is ideally suited to telediagnosis.

The signal can, for example, be sent quickly to supervisors by telephone, text message, or Internet.

The Simmerring radial shaft seal with condition monitoring is a modified version of the standard MSS1 radial shaft seal.

The seals are available for the first time in standard sizes and in the standard materials NBR or FKM.

No extra tools are required for these standard solutions, which makes them great value for money, even for small batches.

Where necessary, they can be fitted with additional sensor functions, for example for monitoring temperatures.

In other words, machine monitoring can be extended to include other parameters.
