Simrit designs multiple-lip radial seal

A Freudenberg Simrit LP product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 30, 2009

Simrit has developed a multiple-lip radial seal with an optimised long-term sealing effect for terminal boxes.

This seal is made of liquid silicon rubber (LSR), which is highly resistant to all environmental influences.

Liquid silicon rubber is thermally stable, resistant to ageing, and largely resistant to water, ozone, and the UV rays in sunlight.

The shape of this LSR seal was amended to ensure an exact fit in the installation area of the photovoltaic module terminal box, while the contours of its sealing lip were optimised for this sealing function using FEM calculations.

To simplify assembly, the lid of the terminal box just needs to be clipped onto the housing.

The seal must equalise any possible tolerances in the housing and lid so that a maximum level of imperviousness is ensured.

This is achieved by means of the multiple-lip sealing edge design.

The housing lid and the optimised seal are also available as a two-part component.

To this end, the silicon seal can be sprayed onto the thermoplastic lid in a single manufacturing stage in order to ensure a permanent bond between the two parts.

This simplifies assembly, guarantees a secure seal fit, and minimises logistics.
