Tester surges in to isolate faults

A SPS Electronic UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Aug 7, 2002

The ST 3300 surge tester is ideal for testing AC stators, rotors and coils in industrial production as well as in maintenance and repair shops.

The physical principle of the surge test is not new, but until now it has been prohibitively expensive.

Using modern PC technology, SPS Electronic UK's ST 3300 surge testers are affordable and easy to use.

The test procedure is applied simply and efficiently - even in serial production - and the test results are easily evaluated.

The ST 3300 surge tester is ideal for testing AC stators, rotors and coils in industrial production as well as in maintenance and repair shops.

A test voltage up to 6kV DC and a surge capacity of 47nF covers the requirements of the vast majority of applications.

The simple pass/fail result is read by the operator or automatically applied to the production process.

The enhanced test method used in the ST 3300 allows the detection and localisation of insulation defects, which are not yet apparent as an inter-turn short circuit.

Whereas other methods, such as resistance, inductance, the resonance method and current measurement at increased frequencies, fail due to low voltage drop.

Only when a high voltage potential is built up between faulty turns or faulty windings will it lead to an arc-over detectable by the ST 3300.

By using a short-time high voltage impulse (which will not damage the DUT) the resulting high current, in connection with the phase displacement, causes the surge tester to generate voltage drops, which lead to an arc-over at the point of the insulation defect.

An oscillating capacitor in the tester then forms an oscillation circuit with the DUT, so the decaying, dampening oscillation allows further quality measurements of the DUT.

This allows multiple fault detection of: insulation defects; inter-turn short circuits; defect in number of turns; switching defects and corona and glow discharge faults.

The integrated PC offers a user-friendly Windows (98/NT/2000) interface which can be integrated into a network.

In addition, the PC stores measurement values and the comparative curves and executes the evaluation of the statistics and data processing.

The graphic representation of the test results and thresholds are shown in colour.

The ST 3300 comes equipped with a fieldbus for the internal control of the device and for any extensions such as resistance measurement; high voltage test; rotation; insulation and protective conductor measurements.
