Sensor-Technik UK recently developed a custom mechanical position sensor and control system interface for a military observation vehicle Modern warfare is all about accuracy and speed, which drives a demand for integrated targeting systems with accurate positioning.

A requirement on a military observation vehicle was to electronically link the periscope to the gun turret, so that the observer could select a target just by finding it through the periscope.

Sensor-Technik was asked to develop position feedback units for both the periscope and the gun turret.

The feedback information also had to include 'start' and 'end' positions, as well as providing a mid position switch for use during transport or general driving.

The system needed to interface with the on-board controller, providing the link between these essential systems.

Sensor-Technik combined a high resolution absolute encoder with a high precision mechanical system to output the limit switch points.

The unit was developed to be highly reliable to meet the high standards of the military and NATO for supply world wide.

Through simple modification of a standard product, Sensor-Technik developed an appropriate and unique piece of hardware for the customer, both in terms of its mechanical style and associated software.

The units are delivered complete and pre-set, ready for immediate installation on the vehicle.

The unit is tested to IP69 and meets NATO requirements.

By combing modern technology with products proven in other industries, a unique solution was developed that provided a computer interface on the one hand, but offered the element of mechanical safety required on the other.

The product meets the specifications of all types of tanks and military vehicles.

It is equally applicable on all sorts of mobile plant for arduous duties, such as earth moving equipment and fire fighting appliances.
