Universal controller for vehicle hydraulics

The STW ESX is a freely programmable universal controller that is ideal for vehicle hydraulic systems.

With its powerful multitasking processor, CANbus interface, weatherproof design and ability to operate over a wide temperature range, the ESX is perfect for designers of off-highway and other construction equipment that is expected to perform reliably under the most arduous operating conditions.

As it is able to execute multiple separate (or related) sensor and actuator management tasks simultaneously, the ESX has ample power to control a complete hydraulic system, ranging from vehicle-mounted equipment such as lifting gear to integral vehicular systems such as hydraulic steering, suspension, drive systems and safety systems.

The standard ESX controller is based on a powerful 16bit Siemens microcontroller running at 20MHz with up to 512Kbyte of Flash memory, 256Kbyte of RAM and 16Kbyte of EEPROM.

An impressive array of I/Os includes 16 digital inputs, eight analogue inputs, seven digital outputs and up to 12 outputs for direct driving proportional valves - saving the expense of additional amplifier or controller modules.

All inputs and outputs have full overvoltage and short circuit protection and come with inbuilt diagnostics.

In addition to the standard I/Os, the ESX features an internal interface for up to two customer-specific expansion modules, each with up to six further I/O lines.

Communications are provided in the form of an industry-standard RS232C serial interface capable of running at up to 19.2Kbaud, and a full CAN 2.0B compliant CANbus interface that supports both low- and high-speed Controller Area Network communications at up to 1Mbit/s.

Using these communications interfaces, the controller can be freely programmed in C or using any of the five standard IEC1131-3 graphical methods: Function Block Diagram; Ladder Diagram; Instruction List; Structured Text; and Sequential Function Chart.

An extensive library of ready-written functions and utilities is available, and controllers can even be supplied ready programmed for customer applications.

The compact and rugged ESX controller is supplied in a robust cast aluminium housing measuring just 170 x 195 x 72mm.

With power supply options of 12 or 24V DC covering all standard vehicle supplies, it is a fanless system that has sufficient passive cooling to operate over a wide -40 to +85C temperature range.

Ventilation slots are protected with Gore-Tex membrane, maintaining both a continuous electromagnetic screen and environmental sealing to IP65 (optionally IP67).

A full range of international approvals includes the ability to perform safety-critical control functions according to Category 3 of EN954-1 and SIL2 of IEC61508.
