Balancing, vibration and measurement on
show

"Productivity through precision" will be the theme of Schmitt Europe's presentation at the IMTS 2004 International Machine Tool Show, which takes place at McCormick Place in Chicago between 8th and 15th September 2004 The latest additions to Schmitt's balancing and vibration control solutions will form the centrepiece of the company's display on Booth B-7518 in North Hall B

Schmitt's recently-enhanced SBS system takes the balancing of grinding machines to new levels of accuracy and convenience, by achieving results to within 0.02 microns (peak to peak) at speeds from 300 to 30,000rev/min.

Comprising a computer control, sensor, spindle mounting adapter and balancing head, the system has been designed as an inexpensive, permanent attachment for grinding machines with wheels from 6 to 48in diameter.

The fully automatic system eliminates time-consuming manual balancing operations, while simultaneously providing improved component finish and dimensional accuracy, minimised surface burning and a dramatic reduction in wheel dressing frequency.

In addition, the SBS system achieves a rapid payback on investment through improved wheel life and increased productivity - combined with substantial savings in machine downtime and maintenance.

Complementing this externally mounted grinding-wheel balancing system is the company's range of internal, ring, semi-automatic and portable grinding wheel balancers, which will also be on show at IMTS 2004.

Another core product to be highlighted by Schmitt will be its AEMS acoustic emission monitoring system, an advanced process control tool capable of delivering 20% productivity increases on most high speed grinding operations.

Consisting of an acoustic sensor and slot-in PCB card for Schmitt's versatile SB-4500 control unit, the AEMS system provides an exceptionally fast response over a wide frequency band, enabling it to be used to eliminate gap time in CNC machining cycles, as well as to monitor the condition of cutting tools or optimise grinding wheel dressing operations.

The system also reports contact between components and rapidly in-fed tools (crash conditions) within 1ms - signalling the machine controller to immediately halt movement before damage can been caused.

Further Schmitt products to be demonstrated on Booth B-7518 will be the company's comprehensive range of Acuity high precision distance measurement equipment, laser displacement sensors and alignment systems, as well as surface roughness and scatter measurement devices.

"The IMTS Exhibition is one of the most important events on the machine tool industry's calendar", comments Schmitt's General Manager, Dean White.

"It represents an ideal showcase for our latest balancing and vibration control equipment, by enabling us to demonstrate how accuracy and precision can be used to maximise manufacturing productivity". Request a free brochure from Schmitt Europe ...
