Automatic System Laboratories has designed-in and is using SRS Product's Cubic enclosure system for its new F900 precision thermometry bridge.

Milton Keynes-based Automatic System Laboratories Ltd (ASL), a leading temperature instrumentation supplier, has designed-in and is using SRS Product's Cubic enclosure system for its new F900 precision thermometry bridge

From its initial conception, ASL leapt to the forefront in the development of AC resistance bridges for the accurate measurement of temperature.

Supplying its first instrument to the National Physics Laboratory, other instruments have since been installed in 42 of the world's National Standards laboratories.

These standards laboratories cover all metrology disciplines, so that ASL products are now used wherever ultimate accuracy depends on accurate temperature.

The Company has also diversified with products and accessories for industrial markets, with sales in this area fuelled by the demands of ISO9000 standards.

The introduction onto the global market of the F900 precision thermometry bridge, the world's most accurate thermometer, presented a number of challenges for the Company.

ASL's design engineers wanted to package the instrumentation in individually-styled cases that would suit the standard 7U instrument up to 28U systems.

However, the front-to-rear panel dimensions of the F900 was not of a standard length.

At 422mm long, the F900 would not fit standard manufactured racks, which came in depths of either 400-500 or 600mm.

ASL's engineers experienced additional problems because most manufacturers could not adapt to meet customised size requirements without changes to their standard tooling.

In addition to its special depth requirements, the Company also needed special sides to support the 35kg weight of the F900 and, to match ASL's corporate product styling, the unit had to be finished in a custom colour.

ASL did not want to use standard off the shelf cases from catalogue companies.

It wanted to use something that was unique in its styling - this it found in SRS's Cubic range of enclosures, not only elegant, but also ideal for its application.

The Company contacted Harlow's SRS Products PLC.

As leading designers and manufacturers of high quality modular enclosures and sub-frames for the electronics industry, SRS has been able to provide a unique solution for ASL.

The Cubic range, with its up-to-date styling and colour schemes, enables equipment to be situated not only in offices etc., but also in reception areas without causing displeasure.

It is a very versatile design concept that enables the enclosures to accept a wide variety of equipment.

The ability to meet and adapt to a range of environmental conditions gives high levels of both performance and appearance - a combination often difficult to find in the same product.

The Cubic enclosures also offer protection against dust penetration and water ingress, whilst the covers fit snugly into the framework to prevent rattle.

The enclosures provide EMC screening.

SRS managed to meet ASL's requirements by working closely with the Company's engineering team to produce a suitably unique size.

Engineers at ASL commented that they appreciated the quality of engineering that had been incorporated into the Cubic range of cases and considered that it enhanced the final design of the new F900 thermometry bridge.
