New from Sumitomo Cyclo Europe, the HSM helical shaft-mounted gear reducer was developed, designed and manufactured in the UK at Hull.

The HSM gearbox is a direct replacement for the company's SMSR shaft-mounted speed reducer, with which it is fully interchangeable.

The new device has been designed using Sumitomo's extensive engineering facilities as part of a two year design programme, during which several prototypes were rigorously tested by engineers and product specialists.

Consultation and preproduction units where then sent to key markets including the USA and Asia for approval.

The existing SMSR is a market leader in many continents, and this new product will enable further penetration into new key target markets.

The product is designed to be mounted directly on the machine shaft of the application, and restrained with the use of a torque arm or flange, thus eliminating the need for an additional coupling or chain drive.

The primary drive is most often via a belt drive from an electric motor, although the reducer is available with adapter input flanges for directly driven motors, both electric or hydraulic.

The model range is available in 13 cases sizes ranging in output torque capacity to 44kNm, and with four ratios 5,13, 20 and 25:1.

The product is now available worldwide though Sumitomo's extensive sales operations and partners.

The HSM is also available with the Taper Grip bush, which is also manufactured by Sumitomo Cyclo Europe in Hull.

This device is used for securing the HSM, and other Sumitomo shaft-mounted products, to the driven shaft without the need for a key or keyway, thus offering a simple fitting procedure.
