Surface Transforms plc wins commercial order for carbon preforms Surface Transforms plc, maker of high technology carbon ceramic friction materials, has won a new order for carbon preforms following the in-house development of an additional product line.

Carbon fibre preforms are mats of interwoven multi-directional carbon fibres, which are the basic materials that Surface Transforms converts into ceramic brakes and discs using its patented technology.

The Europe-based customer is a supplier of carbon-carbon materials, and has placed a small initial order for preforms.

Surface Transforms has been asked by this customer to quote for orders for three projects.

If the initial order for the preforms meets its supply and quality thresholds, Surface Transforms is confident that this could lead to further orders, potentially in excess of GBP1m.

Earlier this year, Surface Transforms began manufacturing its own preforms because it found that external suppliers could not guarantee the quality of their products nor meet defined supply dates.

Since producing its own preforms, Surface Tranforms has been able to greatly enhance the quality of its ceramic brake materials.

The Company now has a new market, which is showing strong potential for generating additional recurring revenues.

Since commencing preform production it has experienced considerable interest from potential customers and is currently pursuing enquiries worth in excess of GBP3m.

Commenting on the sale, Mr Julio Faria, Managing Director, said: "We have been able to develop a high quality preform primarily for our own use.

In addition a substantial market exists from other companies who, like us, have experienced poor quality and long lead times from external suppliers.

Our new range of carbon fibre preforms is being aggressively marketed and so far our existing and potential customers have been delighted with the quality of material produced.

Our current plant has the capacity to produce material worth in excess of GBP4m pa, with room for further expansion.".
