Surface Transforms has performed successful "initial material evaluation testing" on the new ceramic aerospace engine parts being developed for BAE Systems.

Surface Transforms has performed successful "initial material evaluation testing" on the new ceramic aerospace engine parts being developed for BAE Systems In January, Surface Transforms supplied parts for testing for a non-friction related engine application which BAE Systems is using in a new technology development programme

During tests the parts were subjected to extreme conditions on a fully operational engine test bed after which a visual inspection revealed that the parts were in excellent condition.

More post-test analysis will be carried out by BAE to determine if refinements are necessary.

As a result of this test, BAE has requested a further new component for the same engine in the same material and has given a commitment to order four parts.

BAE is also evaluating whether there is further scope for the materials because of their very light weight and high temperature characteristics.

This will be both for the current project and other related projects.

Testing will now continue with the supply of materials on a commercial basis with a view to supplying production products in the next 18 months to three years.

Surface Transforms directors believe that should the programme be successful, it may lead to sales in excess of GBP 2 million per annum over a minimum of a 10-year period.

David Levis, Commercial and Finance Director at Surface Transforms, said: "It's highly encouraging that the initial test went so well and the BAE team were very pleased with the first results.

This is a milestone for Surface Transforms because it is the first time our products have been successfully tested for non-friction uses".
