Soft-down stays smooth the way

A Sugatsune Kogyo UK product story

Designer Leonhard Pfeifer chose the NSD fully adjustable soft down stay to realise his dream for a disappearing drinks cabinet and shelf table.

A stylish wall bar from Woodman Estonia offers serious space saving features thanks to Sugatsune soft-down stays.

When closed its cool and minimalistic but with a touch the front panel smoothly descends revealing the Amaretto and Armagnac.

The effortlessly slick movement is made possible by Sugatsune's now well established Lapcon soft-down stays.

Top designer Leonhard Pfeifer chose the NSD fully adjustable soft down stay to realise his dream for a disappearing drinks cabinet and shelf table.

The concept is to have a physically unobtrusive wall unit that with one touch opens to reveal drinks, glasses and a generous work surface.

The front of the cabinet is a combination of walnut veneer and an inlaid stainless steel motif, it is such a strong visual statement that a colleague recently remarked "I thought that was a piece of modern art".

But the real magic occurs when the panel is gently pulled forward.

Thanks to the adjustable NSD damped stays the front panel glides down and settles into the open position providing an ample surface area for preparing drinks while giving access to glasses and libations.

It is a neat design that gives maximum hospitality in a miniature package.

Often soft-down stays are added to furniture to bring a touch of style and elegance, in this case they are integral to the design.

Without damped stays the downward opening panel would self-destruct and possibly leave the user alcohol soaked and bruised.

For this reason the designer is happy to put his trust in solid Sugatsune hardware that has stood the test of time.

NSD stays are part of the Sugatsune Lapcon range of damped stays, much copied now but the actually first to be brought to the market.

Japanese attention to detail and quality control mean that these units are unmatched on reliability and robustness.

If you want a door or lid to open or close smoothly without bangs or crashes these are the solution.

The NSD range offers variants for top opening, upward opening or downward opening lids or doors and can be adjusted for opening angle.

They are attractive units with a warm nickel finish that speaks quality which is why top end furniture manufacturers continue to specify Sugatsune.
