Matched locks improve boat appearance

A Southco product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jan 16, 2008

Southco Marine's One Look-One Lock concept delivers a unified hardware look with the convenience of using a single key code throughout a vessel.

Four new Mobella lock products from Southco Marine are designed to help builders of upscale sailing and motor boats and yachts provide greater consistency in hardware aesthetics and performance across multiple access locations within each boat.

They expand upon Southco Marine's One Look-One Lock concept that delivers a unified hardware look with the convenience of using a single key code throughout a vessel.

Each unit features high-security Star-Lock design, styling options for compatibility with other hardware and the convenience of single-source purchasing.

All four products are built around the Star-Lock system lockbox, featuring an active locking deadbolt with an upturned hook mechanism to prevent door liftoff.

Each delivers the enhanced security of a three-axis, six-pin-tumbler design that is more difficult to compromise through picking or unauthorised key duplication.

Each features the robust performance of 100% marine-grade construction, plus the ergonomic comfort of keys with moulded nonslip contour grips for easier operation.

The collection is supported by a variety of designer handles, privacy knobs, accent trim and finishes that makes it easier to maintain consistency with other hardware throughout a boat, while satisfying specific customer styling preferences.

Two new locking latches for entry door and cabin door applications - the McCoy Star Round and the McCoy Star Square - add depth-of-choice to the existing family of McCoy entry door latch products.

These mortise-mounted units feature shuttered lockplugs to prevent water or dirt intrusion and complement robust performance with stylish round and square escutcheon plates in multiple finishes to co-ordinate with other vessel aesthetics.

Both also offer nonlocking versions with an interior privacy knob and an exterior emergency override mechanism.

The Single Star entry door lock provides all the advantages of Star-Lock performance in a deadbolt mechanism that can be installed alone or as a supplement to existing latches for cabin door, washboard door, or other enclosure door applications.

Its mortise-mounted design leaves only the keyhole fixture visible on the door front and the privacy knob on the back.

The versatile new L-Star edge-mount lock format provides Star-Lock security for bi-fold doors, engine access hatches, crew cabin access and wood or acrylic washboard entryway doors popular on sailboats.

Its flush-profile housing slips into the back edge of the door panel and leaves only the keyhole trim-plate visible from the front.

All Mobella McCoy and Single Star mechanisms suit door thicknesses ranging from 22 to 45mm, while the L-Star fits washboard door profiles down to 19mm without a recess.

Exterior finish options include diamond brass, polished chrome and satin chrome treatments.

All models offer an interior mechanism to enable lock actuation from the inside of the door.

In washboard door applications, the Single Star and L-Star models allow for an engagement angle of up to 15 degrees between the horizontal overhead hatch and the washboard door.

They also offer matching striker hoods to provide added style and protection in washboard door entryways with horizontal hatch covers as thin as 10mm.
