The Environment Agency has awarded Servelec a contract valued at GBP 1.6 million to design two regional schemes to improve flood forecasting in the Anglia and South West Regions.

The Environment Agency has awarded Servelec a contract valued at GBP 1.6 million to design two regional schemes to improve flood forecasting in the Anglia and South West Regions.

Groundbreaking technology will provide operational alarms and flood warnings, and hydrometric data will be stored for future analysis.

Specifically updated software will provide data for new flow modelling, weather radar and more importantly, flood forecasting systems.

The aim of the Environment Agency is to protect and improve the environment and in doing so, contribute to sustainable development.

The new contract will improve the Environment Agency's ability to forecast floods and droughts and to monitor pollution.

The Anglian Region covers more than 27,000km2 and is the home to more than five million people.

The Anglian Region telemetry system links to over 900 outstations across the region, supplying river level, river flow and raingauge data to all Anglian Region offices.

The new system will offer a quicker, more accurate and detailed information service in the South West and Anglian Regions and partner related strategic initiatives in the Midlands, Thames and Environment Agency Wales regions.

Servelec has a long history of working with the Environment Agency, having implemented the existing monitoring systems in Anglia and South West in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In addition, Servelec implemented the monitoring system for the Southern Region in 1999.

Alan Stubbs, Managing Director of Servelec, says "Servelec is proud to provide Anglia and the South West with leading edge web technology to deliver accurate flood forecast information, enriching the quality of life for the people who live there".
