Vision software handles most cameras

A Scorpion Vision product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Feb 7, 2008

Fire-i Software will automatically load dedicated drivers for 99% of industrial firewire cameras on the market.

Scorpion Vision is a Windows-based machine vision software that exploits the capability of Windows to detect and connect to Firewire and USB cameras that comply wth DirectShow and Microsoft.NET.

This means Scorpion Vision Software has a huge range of cameras at its disposal.

Firewire is generally the interface of choice for industrial systems because it can handle multiple cameras using the same bus.

Each camera is addressed using an identification number.

Systems with more than ten Scorpion Vision firewire camera systems are not uncommon.

The technology also allows the mixing and matching of different camera capabilities.

A small Eur100 VGA camera can be used for simple part verification, next to a high-performance, high-resolution camera costing thousands of Euros for micron level measurements.

The driver level interfacing is critical because a robust imaging data bus is essential for continuous high-speed frame grabbing.

The PC resources need to be constantly available for the main task of processing the incoming images on the fly, with zero delay.

A robust and reliable camera driver interface is therefore a major consideration in a complex multicamera vision system.

Scorpion Vision engineers tend not to use the built-in native Windows 1394 support.

They use Fire-i Software by Unibrain.

The software will automatically load dedicated drivers for 99% of industrial firewire cameras on the market.

The software removes the pain of setting up individual manufacturers' camera drivers, offering instead a universal interface that exploits the individual capability of each camera.
