OPC (Object Linking and Embedding for Process Control) is the rapidly growing industry standard software platform that provides a common communication interface for process control devices, regardless of the controlling software or devices in the process.
It comprises a standard set of interfaces, properties and methods for use in process control and manufacturing automation applications.
Such is the acceptance of OPC now that non compliant products are losing market share to OPC compliant devices.
Many manufacturers are realising this fact and looking for an OPC solution to "future proof" their existing or new product lines.
This was the case for Status Instruments when developing their new range of MEDACS II signal conditioning units.
The company wanted to ensure that the new units were able to keep pace with the rapidly changing technology in process control and saw OPC as an absolute requirement.
They also realised that the best route to achieving this was to enlist the help of a company with specialist knowledge.
They turned to Tascomp, developers of industrial software solutions, including the class leading Prodigy SCADA software.
Through Tascomp's development of an OPC server, Status Instruments has achieved full OPC compliance for the MEDACS II range ensuring international compatibility and connection.
By using the standard OPC client-server model, any OPC compliant device such as the MEDACS II units will connect easily and seamlessly into overall plant control systems, without the need for lengthy installation procedures and special interfaces.
