Students apply laser technology to gifts

Pennichuck Middle School students are applying their learning towards making stylish, fine quality wood-turned, engraved pens, which will be sent to US troops overseas.
At this special time of holiday giving, Pennichuck Middle School students of Nashua, New Hampshire, are applying their learning towards making stylish, fine quality wood-turned, engraved pens, which will be sent to US troops overseas.
Led by their Technology Education Teacher, Thomas Prive, the students are supplied with 0.75in blocks of quality wood, such as Rosewood, along with a pen assembly kit, which includes the ink and hardware.
Using a lathe, the students turn the wood, then sand, finish, and assemble the pens.
To further enhance the quality of the pens, Technology Education Concepts welcomed Prive to its location in Concord, New Hampshire to use a LaserPro laser engraver.
Each of the pens was engraved with "Serving with honor" and "Pennichuck MS Nashua, NH".
The finished result is a handsome pen that Pennichuck students are proud to give to the troops.
Thomas Prive, Nashua's Technology Education Teacher, was selected to receive the 2005-06 "Technology Education Teacher of the Year" and "Technology Education - Program Excellence" awards given by the NH Technology Education Association at the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Awards.
Richard Amarosa, President of Technology Education Concepts, states: "TEC enjoyed the opportunity to work with Mr Prive to incorporate hands-on laser technologies into his classroom curriculum".
