Braided sleevings offer good abrasion resistance
Tyco Electronics has added Rayflex expandable braids to its Raychem range of overprotection products for electrical harnesses and fluid management systems.
They will be installed both in new build and as retrofit replacement of the unsealed ETFE wire harnesses on trains already in-service.
Harnesses fitted to the engine and transmission are regarded as mission critical - any failure being liable to result in service disruption.
The Coradia Class 175 and 180s have side skirts, which reduce airflow over the Cummins diesel engines, significantly raising the temperature of the operating environment.
At these higher temperatures wire that is not crosslinked can display reduced abrasion and cut-through resistance characteristics and, along with possible dirt ingress into unsealed harnesses, provides a potential for premature wear.
Alstom has therefore decided to switch to Raychem System 25 sealed harnesses comprising crosslinked Spec 44 wire with a fuel- and diesel-resistant jacket, moulded parts and adhesives.
These offer total compatibility, integrity and long-term survivability of the complete cable interconnection system.
They have a proven record of reliable in-service performance in comparable applications - around Cummins diesel engines in high temperature environments on military and marine vehicles.
Alstom sees them as an opportunity to enhance reliability and reduce through-life costs.
