Alstom has chosen Raychem high-voltage polymeric insulation and cable assemblies, from Tyco Electronics, for the new Pendolino high speed advanced tilting trains it is building for the UK West Coast Mainline service Tyco Electronics is supplying Raychem HV polymeric pantograph feet, busbar insulators, flexible coil inter-car jumpers, intermediate roofline and downlead cable assemblies and Bowthorpe surge arrestors for the 53 trains in production

The choice of these low-maintenance polymeric products was based on their proven history of in-service reliability and zero defect, combined with operating cost benefits and opportunities for greater design freedom.

Raychem polymeric components are just one third of the weight, a quarter of the cross-sectional area and more tolerant to engineering stresses than their ceramic counterparts.

In addition they are not susceptible to damage from vibration or stone impacts and deliver a longer and more reliable life at lower cost to the operator.

Tyco Electronics' comprehensive range of HV polymeric products includes: insulators for pantograph supports, busbars and switchgear; surge arrestors qualified for locomotive use; terminations and feedthrough bushings; transformer downleads and roofline bus systems - supplied as complete assemblies with current transformer and screened T-connector, fully tested and ready for installation.

The reliability of Raychem polymeric technology in high-voltage rail applications is well proven and typically demonstrated by over 15 years successful in-service operation on the SNCF TGV.

The new Pendolino trains are due to enter passenger service on the West Coast Mainline during 2002 and the first two series trains were delivered for testing and commissioning in December 2001.
