Volkswagen uses Technoelast compound in Golf VI

A TechnoCompound product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Dec 1, 2008

Technocompound has recently added the V D4011 I 1 weather- and UV- resistant TPO compound to its Technoelast range.

Volkswagen uses the compound to make the front spoiler lip on its Golf VI model.

The compound provides the right amount of stiffness and elasticity for this application and its high melt-flow gives good injection-moulding properties.

The compound's weather and UV resistance were also important for this application, given that the front spoiler lip is exposed to spray water, road salt, dust and wide temperature variations.

The part was developed by SLM Kunststofftechnik of Oebisfelde, Germany.

The spoiler lip measures about 1.7M in length and is situated underneath the car's front bumper.

It protects the front spoiler and bumper assembly from damage caused by parking near high kerbs.

The spoiler lip also helps to reduce the vehicle's drag coefficient and cuts the level of wind-noise during travel.

The Technoelast V D4011 I 1's balanced stiffness-to-elasticity ratio, (Shore hardness 40) prevents the front spoiler lip from deflecting backwards under the wind pressure, which would form air vortices under the car.

The TPO compound retains its mechanical properties even at temperatures as low as -40C.

Its good melt flow ensures uniform filling of the mould, despite the component's length and partially low wall thickness of 1.5mm.

The material yields a high-quality surface finish.

Technocompound's TPO compounds are based on a polyblend of polypropylene and EPDM rubber.

Products from the Technoelast range are available in Shore hardness grades A through D and provide good processing properties, high temperature resistance, good damping characteristics and high elastic resilience.
