The MicroStrain range of microminiature displacement sensors available from Techni Measure are so small that there is even one model with only a 1.5mm full-scale range.

These tiny differential variable reluctance transducers (DVRTs) are ideal for very small linear displacement measurements.

These sensors are available with standard stroke lengths of 3, 6 and 9mm, as well as the 1.5mm model with submicron resolution.

The outside diameter is just 1.5mm, and there are several specialised mounting attachments available, including a barb fitting for mounting in soft tissue.

These sensors include a short 200mm lead out, fitted with a 4-pin keyed connector.

Other features include a linear analogue output, flat dynamic response up to kilohertz levels, and very low temperature coefficients.

The free sliding 0.5mm diameter cores, are extremely lightweight and use flexible biocompatible NiTi alloys to provide resistance to kinking and permanent deformation.

Typical applications include tissue deformation, positioning of optical components, virtual reality sensing and robotic systems.

Additional external signal conditioning modules provide the required excitation and demodulation of the output signals, providing either voltage or serial outputs.
