10 Gb/s SONET/SDH testing in the field

Tektronix has introduced a portable version of its OTS9000 Optical Test System which provides field testing of new high-speed, 10 gigabits per second optical networks

Tektronix has introduced the OTS9010 Optical Test System, a portable version of Tektronix' OTS9000 Optical Test System, which was unveiled in February of 2000 The OTS9010 provides installation contractors and network operators with the portable test functionality needed to enable field maintenance and testing of new high-speed, 10 gigabits per second (Gb/s) optical networks, while decreasing test time, manufacturing and installation deployment costs and time-to-market by providing multi-channel support in a single system

"This introduction is an example of our ability to actively leverage our technology throughout a product's life cycle.

With the OTS9010, we've taken functionality from the OTS9000, a rack-mounted product we announced four months ago for equipment manufacturers, and transformed it into a portable optical test set for use in the field," said Scott Bausback, vice president, Communications Business Unit.

"This new product tests 10 Gb/s SONET and SDH systems - among the fastest, most complex network architectures being deployed globally today.

Incorporating a host of features, including multi- channel test capabilities addressing high throughput testing requirements, the OTS9010 significantly reduces installation test times." Ideally suited for manufacturer installers, network operator installers and maintenance contractors of OC-192c/STM-64c networking equipment, the OTS9010 is also useful for equipment manufacturers who require pattern generation and analysis verification of multiple signals through bit error rate (BER) analysis.

The OTS9010 holds multiple test modules to support 10 Gb/s SONET/SDH analysis, and is designed specifically for multi-channel testing.

Optimised to test dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems at 10Gb/s, the OTS9010 resides on a flexible platform designed to grow as test requirements change.

Users can test OC-12c/STM-4c and OC-192c/STM-64c circuits simultaneously, greatly reducing test/installation times.

The platform's flexible, modular architecture supports continually changing test requirements by accepting new capabilities as they become available.

The OTS9010 initially tests OC-192c/STM64c, and with additional modules has the ability to test OC-3c/STM-1c through OC-48c/STM-16c.

Another module will support jitter testing from OC-3c/STM-1c to OC-192c/STM-64c.

Users can add capabilities and preserve their capital investment by purchasing additional modules that fit into the original platform.

The OTS9000 and OTS9010 platforms share an identical hardware/software infrastructure, so the same application modules can be used on both systems, providing users with enhanced flexibility, greater functionality and cost savings.

Delivering on the platform architecture, Tektronix also announced the availability of the OTS9101 10 Gb/s SONET/SDH Test Module, which is interchangeable between both the OTS9000 and OTS9010 platforms.

The OTS9101 module adds the ability to analyse B3 errors, path overhead and concatenated OC-192c/STM-64c payloads.

By adding the ability to test concatenated payloads, customers can more thoroughly test network elements for problems - such as pattern dependency - that could go undetected until service is turned up.

This enables equipment manufactures to identify problems early in the manufacturing process - eliminating costly upgrades.

The OTS9101 can also analyse SONET/SDH payloads down to the STS-1 level within the OC-192c/STM-64c payload.

By analysing the B3 byte and path overhead, end-to-end system performance can be evaluated and defects caught - which could be missed if evaluating line and section overhead only.

Both platforms are designed to accept new capabilities as technology requirements change. Request a free brochure from Tektronix ...
