GPRS interoperability test functions for
analyser

GPRS interoperability test functions for the Tektronix K1297-G20 protocol analyser answer an urgent need among mobile handset manufacturers and network operators

Tektronix has announced an important new option for testing mobile handsets for General Packet Radio System (GPRS) compliance GPRS is a wireless 2.5G standard that handles IP data as well as voice traffic

GPRS interoperability test functions for the Tektronix K1297-G20 protocol analyser answer an urgent need among mobile handset manufacturers and network operators for quick and easy tools to test and verify their emerging GPRS-compliant products.

Network operators are encountering delays in the deployment of third generation (3G) technologies.

With GPRS, they can use their current infrastructure to quickly implement 2.5G or next-generation services as a new revenue source.

Currently, delivery of GPRS mobile handset products is constrained due to problems in verifying both hardware and software components.

When GPRS mobile products enter volume production, manufacturers will be under tremendous pressure to meet consumer demand.

"With the slowdown that is occurring with the development of 3G technologies, there is a heightened pressure on manufacturers to quickly bring 2.5G solutions, such as GPRS, to market.

Tektronix is the first test and measurement company to offer communications equipment manufacturers a complete suite of products for GPRS network simulation and interoperability" , said Hannes Schaedel, vice president, Mobile Business Unit, Tektronix: "Without dedicated interoperability test solutions, communications equipment manufacturers have no practical way to confirm that their designs will work on a GPRS network." The new GPRS interoperability software for the Tektronix K1297-G20 protocol analyser simulates the presence of an entire GPRS network when connected to a base station subsystem (BSS).

With the GPRS software users can connect more than 1000 mobile phones sending and receiving data traffic on the simulated "GPRS network".

Via the Gi-interface, users have the capability to access the Internet or a local Web server on the K1297-G20 protocol analyzer for end-to-end diagnostics.

With extensive test suites for Logical Link Control (LLC), Subnetwork Dependent Convergence Protocol (SNDCP) and GPRS Mobile Management/Session Management (GMM/SM) protocol layers and a broad range of exercises for emerging designs, the K1297-G20 with GPRS software is currently the only complete solution available for verifying the proper interaction of GPRS mobile terminals and the network switching subsystem.

The K1297-G20 is a full-featured, compact protocol analyser which can be configured for a wide range of protocols.

It supports multi-channel and multi-port protocol testing and incorporates a broad selection of conformance test suites.

The existing GPRS-related features available with the K1297-G20 have made Tektronix the No.1 supplier of GPRS signalling protocol test equipment, and the new GPRS interoperability features round out the industry's only complete GPRS protocol test solution.
