The Telford-based logistics division of electrical power distribution, automation and industrial control expert, Schneider Electric, has won approval to the new BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality standard

The Telford-based logistics division of electrical power distribution, automation and industrial control expert, Schneider Electric, has won approval to the new BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality standard The approval, which is the first gained by any UK Schneider Electric division to this new standard, recognises the commitment of the logistics team to continual improvement focussed on achieving enhanced customer satisfaction

The assessment required for approval to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 was carried out by ASTA, a certifying body which has close ties with the British electrical industry.

Following just nine months of preparatory work, the division achieved the coveted distinction of an assessment that identified no non-conformities, which is an excellent result.

"While the clear focus of the new quality standard and, indeed, of Schneider Electric, is on customer satisfaction, our work in preparing for the assessment has also proved very beneficial to the company itself," said Caroline Davies, quality manager for Schneider Electric's logistics division.

"For example, the standard concentrates on objectives and on processes as a whole, rather than on individual operations.

This means that there are no "black holes" which remain unassessed and unaudited." "Fussy documentation is also avoided," continued Caroline, "and extensive use is made of process flow charts.

We found that this approach provided us with powerful tools to identify areas where improvements were possible and, of course, we implemented the necessary changes prior to our assessment.

However, improvement is an ongoing process, and we will certainly continue to use these new tools to further enhance our practices and processes in the future.".
