Schneider Electric has been chosen to provide the systems technology for the full process control refit on three units at Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire, the largest, cleanest and most efficient coal fired power station in the UK Drax Power together with systems integrator, Capula, selected Schneider Electric because of its capabilities with regards to meeting the demanding requirements of the system specification

The contract was won against stiff competition, but Quantum PLCs and Unity Pro software, both from the Telemecanique brand of Schneider Electric, promise to provide Drax Power Station with high reliability, performance, ease of installation and maintenance, as well as future support.

The long-standing working relationship between Capula and Schneider Electric also played a decisive role.

The two companies have worked together in providing similar Modicon Quantum solutions over the past ten years, and their co-operation with Drax Power on this project will help provide a flexible control scheme for the next 20 years.

Drax Power Station comprises six generating units, with a combined output of 4000MW of electricity.

Drax Power currently supplies enough power to meet some 7% of the UK's electricity needs.

The project, which will take four years to complete, will completely refurbish the control and instrumentation systems on three generating units as well as the station common services, including the water treatment plant.
