Distribution equipment improves electrical safety
Schneider Electric now fits robust screens where needed to shield incoming connections in all of its low-voltage distribution switchboards.
The entire range of low-voltage distribution equipment from the Merlin Gerin and Square D brands of Schneider Electric is now being fitted, as standard, with finger-proof voltage test points.
There are many occasions, particularly during commissioning and testing, when it is impossible to avoid working on electrical distribution equipment that has live incoming connections.
The need to prove a voltage presence or absence has been highlighted by the HSE as part of the testing process in an effort to reduce the potential for incidents on site.
To address the inevitable hazards created by such a situation, Schneider Electric now fits robust screens where needed to shield incoming connections in all of its low-voltage distribution switchboards.
To facilitate testing, the screens are either drilled with test point holes that restrict finger access, while allowing the entry of test probes, or are clearly marked for the installer to drill these holes.
The screens are IP2X rated and carry clear identification labels.
Commenting on this move, Tom France, Marketing Manager for Final Distribution Products at Schneider Electric says, "Schneider Electric is always looking at ways to improve the safety of its products and to protect those who use them".
"These screens are simple and unobtrusive, do not reduce cable space yet they provide additional protection against accidental contact with live parts and electrical shock".
Schneider Electric recognises there may be operational or safety reasons for considering live working, but only under the strictest of controls and following specifically the guidance set out in HSG85 electricity at work safe practices.
