A novel miniature linear motor module combines a linear motor, linear guide, encoder and cabling in an integrated unit with a standard drive.

A novel miniature linear motor module combines a linear motor, linear guide, encoder and cabling in an integrated unit with a standard drive Called the RDM Micro, the new system is designed to help OEMs, machine builders and end users reduce specification, build times and costs, improve levels of reliability and performance, and eliminate the problems often encountered when sourcing individual components

The RDM Micro is the first system of its kind to be launched following the recently announced strategic control partnerships between THK, Parker, Renishaw and HMK and combines the latest technology from each company in a single solution that can be supplied preprogrammed and ready to install.

The new RDM Micro has been developed as a modular, lightweight and compact system, capable of handling loads of up to 15N continuous force, and is based around THK's proven tubular linear technology combined with caged ball linear guide technology.

This uses equally separated steel balls, spaced by a cage with pockets of lubricating grease, to provide precise and consistent motion within a motorised load-bearing block.

In addition, each row of balls is set at a 45-degree angle to the guide rail, providing a number of advantages over conventional motion guides, including equal capacity in all four directions, greater precision and reduced variation in rolling resistance.

The high performance linear servomotor, provides exceptional power distribution, with a good motor force-to-weight ratio and significantly greater accuracy at higher velocities than more conventional devices.

Rapid acceleration and high speeds can be achieved, while the use of a dedicated Renishaw linear encoder allows the load bearing block mechanism to be moved in incremental steps to an accuracy of within +/-0.1um.

The system is controlled from a standard Parker ViX digital servo drive and power supply to provide a "plug-and-go" system requiring only programming.

THK is working closely with its chosen integration partner, HMK, which provides application and integration knowledge where required by customers.

Available in a number of standard strokes, the RDM micro module has a stroke range from 9 to 409mm, measuring only 49mm high by 60mm wide making it ideal for applications where access or space is restricted, or where miniaturised equipment is required, such as in pick and place systems for electronics and telecommunications components, in medical devices, test and measuring instruments and compact process lines.
