The Advanced Powertrain Control Symposium 2004 will be held by the Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) at Birmingham's Millennium Point on 9th December 2004 The intensive day-long event is the first of its type in the Midlands and will see automotive industry leaders revealing the latest research, covering four key themes

These are: virtual calibration, real time control and controller area networking (CAN), advanced control algorithms, vehicle calibration and driveability.

The TIC's conference is backed by prominent automotive engineering sponsors.

Visteon, Ford's electronic components partner is joining forces with the UK arm of US-based leader in the field of automotive powertrain development systems, MTS, and German powertrain development specialists IAV.

These industry leaders are being supported by the automotive division the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The opening five-part session on virtual calibration will consider the value of virtual testing, together with the use of open systems and cosimulation techniques.

There will be contributions from Visteon, Mathworks, Ricardo, MIRA and Land Rover.

The area of real time control, together with the use of controller area networks, looks at recent developments in both hardware and software, as well as the calibration of real time controllers.

There are five presentations involving speakers from MTS, KleinKnecht, Influx Technology and TIC.

Visteon, Land Rover and TIC come together to present the four sections of the advanced control algorithms session.

This covers the use of the linear quadratic regulator as well as the relevance of Smith Predictor and sliding modes to modern engines.

The concluding session is based on vehicle calibration and driveability and will comprise four parts given by presenters from TIC and Morgan Cars.

It will focus on the suppression of road, transmission and engine vibrations for ride refinement - a field of particular expertise at TIC.

A supporting exhibition of relevant supply companies and technical demonstrations will complete this unique event for UK automotive powertrain engineers.
