December sees the start of a series of courses by the Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) in Birmingham, to help everyone advance their IT skills.

These are short courses which cater for every ability level and are aimed at helping career development.

Confederation of British Industry (CBI) Director General, Digby Jones, recently warned of the effects of globalisation on UK employment, saying: "The challenge is to create more jobs than we lose and ensure people have the skills to take advantage of them".

The British Computer Society has also predicted around 12% of British IT jobs could be lost to low-cost foreign markets by 2010, because of the trend known as "offshoring".

However, the Society's research also shows that skills shortages and technological innovations will create opportunities for British IT professionals prepared to adapt and retrain.

Set against this background TIC, as West Midlands academy for Microsoft and European training centre for Cisco Systems, offers comprehensive computer skills training and education.

TIC courses extend from introductory Windows programs, through basic and advanced website design, to expert computer-networks training.

They also encompass several innovative manufacturing technologies such as computer-aided design.

Included are quality-related diploma courses accredited by the Institution of Quality Assurance, which has ranked TIC as one of its top UK education centres.

At a time when university engineering and technology faculties are struggling to attract new students, the University of Central England's TIC has reported a record intake.

TIC's e-skills course costs vary according to length and a subsidy is offered to job-seekers.
