Engineers get paid to become product designers through free MSc courses at Technology Innovation Centre.

Qualified engineers are being offered the chance to significantly enhance their skills and career prospects by Birmingham's Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) As the University of Central England's technology campus, TIC is offering bursaries for students to study engineering product design

TIC Course Director, Sandy Grant, says: "This free MSc course is an outstanding opportunity for engineers to gain skills enabling them to appreciate the technological and production issues relating to design".

"Their computer-related design capabilities will be enhanced and they'll also be shown how to apply analytical engineering principles to complex products".

The course is aimed at helping students align their thinking with that of leading-edge businesses in order to make a real difference in the design of products for tomorrow's world.

It combines creative thinking and the emerging subject of "futurology", with mechanical engineering and industrial design.

Other subjects covered include digitally based computerised design, advanced materials and manufacturing technologies, together with the increasingly important aspects of sustainable and eco-design.

The full-time course starts in February 2005; fees are fully funded and students will be paid to develop real projects with small businesses.

TIC's established links with local, national and international businesses have prompted high ratings among UK engineering faculties and prompted record intakes of undergraduate and overseas students in the current year.

It also enjoys European academy status for Cisco and has been judged as a top education centre by the Institution of Quality Assurance.

As a leading proponent of industrial design, in the West Midlands, TIC is also running a product design Masterclass for sixth formers on 10th March 2005.

TIC's Sandy Grant says: "Interest from schools in this masterclass is very high".

"We are developing a powerful presence in the industrial design field".
