At the close of the autumn term, UCE Birmingham's Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) announced that, for the first time, more than 600 students had enrolled on its 2005-06 undergraduate courses.

At the close of the autumn term, UCE Birmingham's Technology Innovation Centre (TIC) announced that, for the first time, more than 600 students had enrolled on its 2005-06 undergraduate courses.

This exceeds last year's record numbers by 20%.

TIC's most popular programmes range from music and sound technology through other interactive media studies and a wide range of ICT programmes, to automotive, design and advanced engineering courses.

Postgraduate recruitment is up by a quarter over last year while part-time recruitment is also above expectations.

Postgraduate intake is set grow further with the launch of a newly validated MSc course in interactive media which is due to start in February 2006 alongside its established MSc course in digital television technology and production.

This is the fifth successive year TIC has expanded its overseas student numbers.

Associate Dean Doug Morley-Smith said: "A major TIC strength is that we produce highly employable technologists".

"For example TIC has developed a valuable role in providing academy-training for major global companies such as Microsoft, Cisco and others".

"Relevant modules can be incorporated within our ICT-related undergraduate and foundation degree courses to produce graduates of immediate value in the world-of-work".

The faculty's position as a partner with advanced industry has been endorsed by a recent injection of over $1m of equipment from Cisco.

This will help TIC support 600 other academies throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

TIC's contribution to the development of Microsoft's new educational programmes in the UK was recently articulated by the firm's US-based Learning Development Manager Bill Setten: "TIC has proved over the past three years to be among the UK's leaders in this field and have helped in the implementation process".

Morley-Smith added: "Our students find placements from the BBC to car companies and from EMI to jewellery makers".

"We even have a British Formula Three racing driver on our mechanical engineering course".
