Ball screw line offers very high
traverse speeds
Thomson IBL Company announces a new Rotating Nut Ball Screw Line that can increase traverse speeds up to 200 metres per minute
Thomson IBL Company announces a new Rotating Nut Ball Screw Line that can increase traverse speeds up to 200m per minute Machine designers benefit from enormous increases in speed, with all of the usual benefits of ball screw drives; high efficiency (over 90%), high precision and stiffness, without all of the penalties associated with linear motors

Multi-Axis System ideal for precision assembly
The Modular MicroStage Multi-Axis System is capable of solving point to point, linear and circular interpolation, electronic gearing, contouring, jogging, and user-defined path
The RN series consists of standard diameter and standard lead screws around which a flange-type precision housing has been designed.
This flange-type housing enables a timing belt to drive the nut and contains the preloaded rotating ball nut assembly.
The bearings in the housing are grease packed and sealed for life, so no additional lubrication is needed for most applications.
The rotating nut (RN) series is available in ISO precision classes 3 and 5 in both Medium Duty (single track), or High Duty (twin track) configurations.
According to Kelvin Kellond, Technical Manager for Thomson IBL, there are two factors that limit the traverse speed of shaft driven conventional ball screws.
They are: vibration caused by the shaft running at its critical or whirling speed, and the ability of the ball transfer system to efficiently handle the necessary flow rate of ball bearings over an acceptable life.
Mr.Kellond points out that the RN Series Ball Screws overcome these limitations by: • allowing the shaft to remain fixed and driving the nut.
This means there are no rotational critical speeds to limit traverse rates.
• incorporating a hollow shaft option, available on the ISO class 3 High Duty units, further reducing vibration and noise, thereby extending both application possibilities and the overall life of the ball screw system • introducing a new Hdn end cap design that can accommodate DN values up to 130,000, which translates into ball transfer rates 25% higher than standard units • adding new end support units to provide optimum rigidity The RN Series utilizes Thomson IBL Type 32 and Type 34 precision, high speed XL preloaded ball nuts, Thomson certified bearing quality steel, and the company's patented Close Conformity Gothic Arch ball track design which reduces ball contact stress and provides superior service life.
Integral wipers are standard and superior shaft straightness is maintained for better alignment, lower noise and high ball nut speeds.
