A specialist manufacturer of air-conditioning systems for commercial vehicles has chosen Novec Engineered Fluids, from 3M, for the cleaning of tubing and pipework prior to welding and shaping Madrid based Dirna designs and manufactures air-conditioning units for industrial and commercial vehicles including lorries, vans, tractors and public service vehicles

The Company is committed to the production of ever more efficient units that reduce environmental impact.

It also operates a technician training programme in applied techniques of recovery, reprocessing and prevention of coolant leakage.

In its Industrial Department, Dirna produces rigid and mixed pipework and tubings for its air-conditioning units.

These have to be thoroughly cleaned to remove grease and impurites prior to the welding and shaping processes.

For this process the Company has adopted a new cleaning system using Novec Engineered Fluids, from 3M.

In the new cleaning system, Novec fluid is located inside a Technoclean machine for a two stage process involving cleaning by immersion in the fluid with ultrasonics, followed by drying.

In addition to the impressive cleaning performance achieved with Novec fluids, environmental and toxicological considerations also played an important part in the decision to use these products.

Novec Engineered Fluids, have zero ozone depletion potential and low toxicity characteristics, to offer a considerable reduction in environmental impact compared with chlorinated products or the HCFCs (like 141b) which are prohibited for use in these applications from 1st January 2002.

Mr Martin Varas, Head of the Industrial Dept at Dirna commented; "The tubes emerge totally clean to offer greater reliability in the welding and shaping operations.

We now have a quicker cleaning process, extremely low rejection rates and what we believe to be the best environmental option.

Novec Engineered Fluid is clean, odourless and non-flammable and provides a truly balanced solution".
