Students at TTE Management and Technical Training have successfully completed the first stage of a pioneering project with the Open College Network.

Students at TTE Management and Technical Training have successfully completed the first stage of a pioneering project with the Open College Network.

Since TTE gained full Open College Network (TROCN) membership status in September 2003, 12 of its apprentices have already attained varying levels of accreditation, with a further 12 apprentices due to "graduate" over the forthcoming months.

The Open College Network is a partnership of local education and training providers from all sectors within the Tees Valley, Co Durham, Wearside and Cumbria regions.

It also offers an accreditation service to providers in Scotland.

The aim of the Open College Network is to support learning opportunities, measured and valued against national standards, for learners of all backgrounds and aspirations.

The project, headed by Tony Scott, Senior Trainer at TTE Management and Technical Training, is the first of its kind for technical training and industry.

A qualification system already used by many colleges, the Open College Network's accreditations are becoming increasingly well recognised by educational facilities and employers alike.

Accepted as equivalent to both GSCEs (Levels 1 and 2) and A Levels (Level 3), this partnership with the Open College Network enables TTE to offer a number of unique accredited vocational training courses to its students.

Where these differ from qualifications offered by other awarding bodies is that each course can be designed on an entirely bespoke basis.

Tony Scott commented: "TTE Management and Technical Training is one of the very first 'industry' based training organisations to adopt Open College Network accreditations for some of our courses".

"Involvement with the Open College Network means that we are now able to provide even more flexible qualifications, benefiting both employers and apprentices".

"Through the Open College Network we can offer the apprentices tailored courses, which improves their employability by addressing the requirements of potential employers".

"In turn, this also benefits employing organisations".

Catherine Cox, Curriculum Development Manager at the Open College Network (TROCN), added: "The Open College Network works by offering an accreditation scheme that provides a degree of flexibility not available with other awarding bodies".

"By introducing a real flexibility to our qualifications, learners, such as the apprentices at TTE Management and Technical Training, are now gaining accreditation for achievements that have perhaps been previously discredited but yet remain an essential part of their learning".
