Apprenticeship offers entry to engineering
Martina Bilardi is building herself a promising career in the traditionally male dominated engineering industry using an apprenticeship as the platform to success.
The group is responsible for the planned maintenance, service and repair of plant vehicles such as forklifts, mobile cranes, trailers, wagons and commercial vehicles on the site at Corus Lackenby, Middlesbrough.
Aged between 39 and 63, the vehicle fitters worked towards an NVQ Level Two in vehicle maintenance, which was supported by the north-east employer training pilot, EQ8.
The engineers have many years of experience in their field, but completing the NVQ Level Two qualification has helped them update and validate their skills to a set of current nationally recognised criteria.
Important within the EQ8-funded training are the health and safety elements, which have helped update the underpinning knowledge of the vehicle fitters.
Having completed the qualification, Marske aims to support the vehicle fitters through the next stage of training to achieve NVQ Level Three.
TTE was selected by Business Link Tees Valley to deliver the training.
The Middlesbrough-based technical training company sent its assessor Dick Pilgrim to Corus Teesside to review the vehicle fitters' progress.
EQ8, which is funded by the Learning and Skills Council, provides training subsidises for businesses that want employees without NVQ Level Two qualifications to achieve that standard.
In addition to wage compensation, which is provided to reimburse firms for the cost of releasing employees during normal working hours, EQ8 also allows for training to be delivered in the workplace to prevent disruption to the day-to-day work of the business.
