Faster-switching IGBT modules improve performance

At this year's PCIM show Toshiba Electronics will launch a new family of 1200V IGBT modules designed to meet the needs of applications operating with switching frequencies up to and beyond 50kHz.

At this year's PCIM show Toshiba Electronics will launch a new family of 1200V IGBT modules designed specifically to meet the needs of applications operating with high switching frequencies of up to and beyond 50kHz.

Toshiba's new IGBT++ range of 1200V modules offers high-frequency operation up to 50kHz for hard switching applications and more than 50kHz for soft switching or resonant applications.

As a result, they are ideal for high-voltage high-frequency designs including welding, motor control, power supplies for medical equipment and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) applications.

Modules in the new IGBT++ family are offered in 100, 150, 200 and 400A versions that match the reliability, size and safety specifications of previous Toshiba IGBT products with the same current ratings.

All the modules are supplied in standard European packages, making them ideal 'drop-in' replacements that improve the performance of existing applications without the need for significant redesign.

Both the 100 and 150A modules are '2-in-1' devices supplied in a standard compact European F style package measuring 91.6 x 45.7 x 29.7mm.

The 200A module is a '2-in-1' module in a European G package with dimensions of just 108 x 62 x 23mm.

The 400A module is a '1-in-1' unit supplied in an H-style package with similar dimensions to the 200A unit.

In all cases the electrodes are isolated from the module casing and the isolation voltage for each part is 2500V AC.

Toshiba's IGBT++ family is based on a low-injection, NPT (non-punch-through) planar semiconductor technology that results in significantly lower turn-off losses than previous generations of IGBT modules.

This NPT structure has been combined with a low-injection technique that reduces turn-on and turn-off times by minimising rise and fall times.
