Toshiba is offering the chance for up to two outstanding scientists to join its research and development team in Japan by launching its annual fellowship programme.
Starting in autumn 2005, the Toshiba fellowship programme is available to any PhD-level researcher of EU nationality currently working in a UK academic institution.
The successful candidates would be funded for up to two years, earning a competitive salary, whilst gaining valuable commercial work experience alongside one of Toshiba's research and development teams.
The award is a once in the lifetime opportunity for top European scientists to join forces with leading Japanese researchers in the high tech sector said Toshiba.
The skills and the knowledge acquired on the fellowship can be developed throughout the programme and be brought back to the UK, to help the British technology sectors flourish.
The successful candidates would be based in Toshiba's corporate research and development centre in Kawasaki.
Toshiba has outlined 14 priority research areas for 2005.
The research fellowship, which is supported by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), started in 1983, when Toshiba became the first private company to establish such a programme.
Commenting on the scheme, recent Fellow, Richard Tilley said: "The Toshiba fellowship offered me a great chance to get some industrial experience rather than confining myself to an academic career.
Before the Fellowship I could sell myself only as a chemist.
Now I can offer a broad range of skills from chemistry to electrical engineering to both industry and academia." Previous fellow, Lois Hobson, also valued the placement and said: "Working on a new topic brought the biggest challenges, with an incredibly steep learning curve.
However, the support I was given helped me develop my skills and my self-belief, helping me to progress quickly.
One of the most memorable aspects of the scheme was the sense of teamwork.
The Fellowship scheme developed my confidence, and now that I have worked on new topics with no experience I feel able to cope with anything that future work may bring." Full details, application and registration information are available on the Toshiba web site.
The closing date for applications is 15 December 2004.
