Toshiba has launched its annual Fellowship Programme, giving up to two outstanding scientists the chance to join its research and development team in Japan The programme is an opportunity for PhD-level researchers of EU nationality currently working in a UK academic institution to gain valuable commercial work experience alongside one of Toshiba's research and development teams

The successful candidate(s) will be funded for up to two years with a highly competitive salary.

There are 14 priority research areas for the Fellowship Programme in 2007-08 including security, multimedia, Internet, software, simulation and water treatment.

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for top European scientists to join forces with leading Japanese researchers in the high-tech sector and Toshiba is very happy to provide such an opportunity to EU researchers", said Nobuhiro Yoshida, Corporate Vice President of Toshiba Corporation.

"The skills and the knowledge acquired on the fellowship can be developed throughout the programme and be brought back to the UK, helping the British technology sectors flourish".

Toshiba has an unparalleled track record of pioneering innovation and technology over the last 130 years and has delivered a host of 'world firsts', including the first laptop PC, the HDD and DVD video recorder, the smallest hard disk drive and the first commercially available HD DVD player.

The company is also one of the most prolific patent producers and filed for more than 10,000 patents in 2005 alone.

Japan is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, making it the perfect location for newly qualified scientists looking for the ultimate work experience challenge.

The successful candidate(s) will be based in Toshiba's Corporate Research and Development Centre in the city of Kawasaki, Japan's prosperous "Silicon Valley".

Toshiba is the first private company to establish such a programme.

The research fellowship, established in 1983, is supported by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council).

"The Fellowship Programme was a fantastic opportunity for me to work with one of the best R and D teams in the world".

"I've learnt such a broad range of skills and it's been great to be able to apply them to my career here in the UK", said Dr Bjorn Stenger (Toshiba Fellow 2004-06).

Toshiba welcomes its new fellows when they arrive in Japan and two will be traveling to Tokyo shortly to begin their programmes.

Once completed, all fellows are lifelong Toshiba Fellowship Alumni members, with regular opportunities to network with one another and with their former Toshiba colleagues.

The closing date for applications is 15th December 2006.
