New twin spindle production machining centres

A new range of production orientated, twin and single spindle travelling column vertical machining centres with twin indexing pallet changers designed for simultaneous loading and machining is now being marketed in the UK by Traub Heckert UK of Brackley.

The Eikon VMC 'P' production machining centres can be specified in 500, 800 and 1000 versions which refers to the longitudinal traverse or X-axis of the column.

The twin spindle machine configuration designated DSP is only available on the intermediate 800 and larger 1000 machines.

However, throughout the range, machining strokes are 500 mm by 350 mm by 400 mm, 800 mm by 500 mm by 500 mm and 1000 mm by 500 mm by 500 mm.

Direct drive AC spindles are used with 5.5 kW on the smallest machine and 18.5 kW on the two larger versions.

Infinitely variable spindle speeds are available across the range between 50 and 8,000 revs/min with a high speed 20,000 revs/min option to each machine.

The twin spindle DSP variant has two independent 20 tool magazines which serve each spindle through separate double arm changers in just 1.4 secs.

On the normal P machines a single 20 tool magazine is standard and exchange time is 1.2 secs on the VMC 500P and 1.5 secs on the 800 and 1000 versions.

Both these larger machines can also be specified with a 36 tool magazine.

Indexing time for the 500 mm by 300 mm pallets on the VMC 500P is seven seconds, chip to chip which increases to 12 seconds for the mid-range 800 mm by 400 mm and larger 1,000 mm by 400 mm pallet size fitted to the 800P and 1000P machines.

The same pallet configuration is utilised on the DSP twin spindle versions with each spindle covering half the pallet area in order to accommodate the simultaneous production of two identical components.
