A UK company has developed two treatments for metals that raise the coefficient of friction.

A UK company has developed two treatments for metals that raise the coefficient of friction New from TribTech, Trib-Joints forms permanent friction joints and Trib-Grip creates releasable friction joints

Trib-Joints constitute a novel form of distributed cold pressure weld that can quadruple the strength of press-fit friction joints and double the strength of a shrink fit joints.

They have the unusual benefit of behaving like very high friction couplings that can be designed to yield but not loose strength when overloaded; they are not friction welds or adhesive bonds.

The applied chemical gel does not cure but decomposes when trapped between rubbing faces under high pressure.

It then releases elemental components which enable the solid phase welding.

Main advantages of these Trib-Joints include ease of application, instant strength with no cure or cooling time, plus increased stability over adhesive bonds.

Others include: seizure can be precisely predicted and controlled; no intermediate filler metal is used or cured plastic layer formed; and joined parts are protected from overload and distortion.

Trib-Grip reverses the normal behaviour of friction between metals.

As a result it raises the dynamic level of grip above the static level to progressively arrest slip without reducing load.

Main advantages of Trib-Grip include ease of application, and near instant grip recovery.

The process does not involve placing abrasives or solids on surfaces that can alter alignment or machining accuracy.

The friction enhancement technology improves the effectiveness of many metal object gripping devices (for example a drill chuck), where the ability to recover grip without the need to reduce load is very beneficial.

This has the potential to solve several metal cutting problems and offers manufacturers a cost-efficient method of improving productivity.
