Functional Safety and its national derivative standards are revolutionising all traditional fields of safety design and testing.

Understanding these new standards is essential for anyone involved in the design, commissioning, management, maintenance, litigation and assessment of devices, machines and plants.

The first in a series of seminars will take place from 8AM to 5PM on Wednesday, 21st May at TUV Rheinland's Functional Safety Division, 1300 Massachusetts Avenue, Suite 103, in Boxborough, Massachusetts.

The first half of the seminar will highlight functional safety and legal issues, provide an overview of safety principles and recommend appropriate safety designs.

During the morning session, Matthias Haynl, the Business Field Manager for Functional Safety at TUVRheinland, will focus on two safety standards - EN ISO 13849-1:2006 and IEC 62061.

He will explain various safety functions covered by these standards such as emergency stop, start/re-start interlock and the safeguard/protection of dangerous motions.

Haynl will emphasise appropriate safety design and principles to satisfy the two standards, including fail-safe techniques and homogenous and diverse redundancy.

Following lunch, Haynl will cover functional safety according to IEC 61508.

This half of the seminar will cover risk analysis, functional safety terminology and design and implementation phase requirements.

Haynl will also provide suggestions on how to maintain the Functional Safety management system and will present recommended procedures for failure detection, diagnosis and fault avoidance.
