Beware of dangerous cable reels

A TUV Rheinland UK product story
Edited by the Engineeringtalk editorial team Jun 2, 2004

Cable reels currently on the UK market may be in violation of the law and potentially dangerous.

Cable reels currently on the UK market may be in violation of the law and potentially dangerous.

In general cables reels are designed to meet the requirements of the harmonised standard EN61242, which has now been found insufficient by the European Commission to support a declaration of conformity with the Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EC.

Therefore, those responsible for putting cable reels on the market should re-assess them against the requirements of the Commission Opinion, to adequately address the risk of fire and of electric shock which is likely during an overload of the cable reels.
